Launched in the UK in 2015, CanO Water is on a mission to change the way we drink. Sourced from a natural spring in the Austrian Alps and housed in an aluminum can, which is the most recyclable packaging on the planet, CanO Water has garnered global attention, from many celebrities and even the Oscars.
The brand has sold over 20 million cans amid increasing consumer demand for more sustainable alternatives to plastic bottled water.
In 2021, CanO Water secured a seven-figure investment sum to further tap into consumer demand for alternatives to single use plastics. The sustainable canned water brand has won ‘significant’ backing from angel investors, including Stefan Orlowski, former European president at Heineken who has joined the team as non-exec chairman. Additional backers include entrepreneur and investor Jason Brook, and Darryl Eales, former CEO of private equity firm LDC.
Today, the brand announces a significant partnership with Virgin Atlantic, to exclusively provide millions of units of canned water per year for the airline’s Upper Class cabin. CanO Water will now be offered to all Upper Class customers network wide; across all aircrafts and routes. The water cans are deemed perfect for travel due to their size and innovative resealable feature.
This undertaking will see Virgin Atlantic removing millions of plastic bottles from its service offering per year, making a valuable start to tackling the billions of plastic water bottles used by the aviation industry per year. In addition to recycling and reusing wherever possible, Virgin Atlantic is now looking for all category lines to be either single use plastic free or sustainable and is one of the first airlines to make the transition to canned water. Reducing large amounts of plastic from planes is not only deemed environmentally friendly from an impact perspective, but managing a lighter aircraft allows for a smaller carbon footprint during the flight.
CanO Water co-founder Josh White comments; “Winning Virgin Atlantic Upper Class and being part of the first global airline to make steps to remove all single use plastic bottles of water is an incredible achievement for CanO Water. We hope this shows other businesses that aluminium is the best alternative when it comes to on-the-go packaging. Be part of our solution.”
Virgin Atlantic Chief Customer and Operating Officer, Corneel Koster said; “We’re committed to offering a more sustainable service for our customers and are going to great lengths to reduce single use plastic in favour of materials that are both lightweight and highly recyclable. The introduction of CanO Water in our Upper Class cabin is an exciting step for us in this commitment to sustainability, while continuing to offer the famous Virgin Atlantic service our customers know and love.’
